[saɪən'tɪfɪk kəm'jʊːnəti, englisch] die, - -, von C. S. Peirce eingeführte Bezeichnung für die Gemeinschaft derjenigen, denen die Artikulation, Erhaltung und Fortentwicklung des normativen Bezugssystems der Wissenschaften zugeordnet ist, im Unterschied zu den Trägern des Wissenschafts- und Forschungsprozesses, den Angehörigen wissenschaftlicher Berufe. Der Begriff ist vor dem Hintergrund entstanden, dass die Wissenschaften durch Bildung eines eigenen Systems von Standards und Regeln wissenschaftlichen Erkennens, der Forschungs- und Handlungslogik gegenüber der Gesellschaft in fortschreitendem Maße autonom geworden sind. Gesellschaftsgeschichtlich ist die Entstehung der Scientific Community an die Entwicklung eines eigenen Kommunikationssystems und die Struktur der Öffentlichkeit der Wissenschaften gebunden.
